I began my journey as a photographer in 1997 while I was attending the University of New Mexico for my BFA. The photography department at UNM focused on ideas and concepts more than the technical side of executing an idea. I base a lot of my ideas on the interrelationships of things and people around me. Because I am always looking at the world and noticing new things I have a plethora of ideas. Usually I have so many ideas that the every day chores of life get in the way of capturing all of them. I started making self portraits so that I could learn how to capture different emotions on film. I felt that I needed to know my relationship to being photographed before I could photograph other people. Photographing other people requires acting as a director. Growing up as an only child I did not have problems asking or trying to persuade people to play games by my rules made the roll of directing very easy to step into. I have always had a passion for storytelling, and I try to create stories that other people can relate to through my photographs. I have gone through different phases in storytelling. At this point I am enjoying creating images with some sort of humor to them. My photo Winter’s Edge is an example of this. There is a lot of pleasure that can be derived from laughing, and I think most people need to lighten up a bit. I made the move to New York City in October of 2001 to pursue
my photography. I sent out my first promo in March of 2002 and got my
first job a few weeks later. I have worked for Ladies Home Journal, Newsweek,
Time Out New York, Esquire, Psychology Today, Scientific American and
other magazines. |
